The Tellurian series consists of photographs of herms or statue heads taken in the villa gardens of Italy. Tellurian means man or human kind: earthlings. The word is derived from the name of the Roman earth goddess, Tellus. The individuals depicted are of ancient and/or enlightened times when intellectual and military prowess translated as manly heroics. They are lost now, returned to the earth, and refashioned from the stone of the earth as an act of commemoration. I intend my photographs to present a paradox; acknowledging both the violence and the benefit of the cosmos and culture these figures represent. The photographs recreate the fictional and mythological space of the fabricated gardens of the past to re-animate the marble figures. These are men bathed in the light of the setting sun or wreathed by laurel leaves. They are marmoreal, valiant, enlightened, illuminated, and lost.
